In this blog post I want to show you some tools that I use to investigate what file operations are causing the Write Cache to grow. Ideally your configured the RAM cache big enough so that the servers will never use the Write Cache overflow on disk. In my case we have Citrix VDI farm that can only boot on every weekend. But some of them had an overflow from up to 15 GB each week. We then enabled the Maintenance Mode on these server and rebooted them as soon as no user were connected anymore.
Of course I was curious why the Write Cache size grow so big. A quick internet search showed me that there is now Tool available from Citrix that could easily show which file operations are causing the Write Cache to grow over time.
So I had to find other ways to figure out why the write cache was getting bigger. The first tool that came to mind was Process Monitor Procmon from Sysinternals. To limit the output to just the Write Operations you should use the following filters:. Generally speaking, the write-cache disk drive letter assignment is a configuration of the OS, and is not managed by PVS.

You should have no trouble with that. Just don't login as a domain user. Always login as the local administrator. When you say that Citrix App layering has no write cache disk, this is probably true, but it is worth asking the question - what is a write cache disk really? The answer is that a write-cache disk is not particularly unique, but is instead a standard NTFS formatted disk that meets certain parameters. The only thing that makes a disk a write-cache disk, is that PVS selects this disk on target boot to store the write-cache, but truthfully it could just as well store any disk on that VM that met the right parameters NTFS, sufficient free space, etc.
Now that we understand that, let's look at the vDisk. This vDisk file now exists independently from the ELM, and you can either modify it or delete it at your leisure with no impact to AppLayering. This brings us to the answer to your question.
The answer is no. But, if you want to manage this through PVS instead, the answer is yes you can do it and it's quite easy. You can either do this when you are creating machines through the XenDesktop Setup Wizard which allows you to create a write-cache drive automatically and assign a drive letteror you can do this through the method I talked about in my last post.
If you really want to do this without touching any PVS components, the only thing I can think of is to build this information into your template.
When you create your targets, select this template in the Streamed Setup Wizard, and hopefully they will honor this setting. When the target device is booted in standard mode or shared mode, the write cache information is checked to determine the cache location. As a result, it will fail over to Cache on the server. Bertrand, Can I ask why E: letter is desirable for write cache? Regards, Mitra. Just check whether you have mounted any CD drive into that VM. If so change the drive letter of that CD drive and than assign the drive letter E to the secondary partition.
Hope this helps you. I think your problem is with the signature Windows make on every disk. I solved this problem on some HP server by breaking the mirror on the master server and using that disk to clone the signature and partition layout on all the others. A client-side write cache provides better performance and scalability. If an available drive with an assigned drive letter is not found, the page file settings cannot be properly allocated, as displayed in the following screen shot.
